The cultural heritage that Heritage Lens is concerned with is not made only of monuments and archives. It is made of transmitted knowledge, of practices tied to a territory, of landscapes that a community has learned to read over time. It is made of family photographs, of birdsong that marks the rhythm of the seasons, of coastlines that change
shape as we watch them. All of this is in motion.
Some things are lost slowly, almost without a sound. Others disappear in a single night.
Heritage Lens was born from the necessity of bearing witness to this change: staying in a place, returning, waiting for something to reveal itself. Understanding what is changing and what endures.
This exhibition brings together six of the twelve works produced within the project. Six artists who chose to remain inside their places of research — a river delta, the coastline of southern Spain, the islands of the North Sea, a flooded city, the mines of Brazil, the marshes of Frisia — with the time and care needed to turn proximity into image. In
some of these works, photography becomes as material as the places it portrays: algae pigments transformed into ink, family photographs rescued from the mud, light imprints on surfaces made to fade.
What emerges is not a catalogue of losses, but the trace of a tenacious attention. In this time of change, looking with precision and continuity is already, in some measure, a form of response. Heritage Lens is a European cultural cooperation project, funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and developed by four photography centres: CoberturaPhoto (Seville), Officine Fotografiche Roma, ISSP (Riga) and Fotofestiwal
(Łódź).
