This workshop aims to look at the possibilities of creating ”A sense of Place“. Contrary to public opinion the “tools“ of photography are not exposure, time and aperture but the abilities of the photographer to capture the mood of a space or the sense of a person. Without those skills a photographer can’t create complex bodies of work.
Participants will shoot with digital cameras and will create images that will feature a personal perspective looking at a chosen place within the vicinity of the area where the workshop will be held.
The question of “truth” will be an integral part of the debate in the workshop. Images might be manipulated on the computer as an extended darkroom tool.
Unmanipulated images can look so strange, that we hardly believe in their authentic state. This will not be a workshop that teaches technical side of manipulation.
It will rather discuss the extended possibilities of the digital image making and the way it changes our perception of a photograph.
Previous research about the subject is at least recommended. How is a place being represented in contemporary photographic practice? How was it represented by painters?
Friday evening: public lecture given by Peter, with an historical analysis and inspirational examples (attendance for people enrolled in the worksop is mandatory)
Saturday morning: presentation, introductory talk, students’ portfolio analysis. Lunch break.
Saturday afternoon: shooting session (each student will focus on his/her specific project and shoot on his/her own)
Sunday: critique and editing of students’ work
The workshop will be held in english, a basic comprehension of the language is strongly suggested. Students will work with their own tools. A digital camera wot lenses and a laptop computer are necessary.
Peter Bialobrzeski studied Politics and Sociology before he became a photographer for a local paper in his native Wolfsburg/Germany. He travelled extensivly in Asia before he went to study photography and design at the Folkwangschule Essen and the London College of Printing. Within the last 16 years he has published twelve books, “XXXholy”, NEONTIGERS”, “HEIMAT”, “Lost in Transition” , “Paradise Now”, “Case Study Homes”, “Informal arrangements”, “The Raw and the Cooked”, „Nail Houses“ and recently „Cairo Diary“ , „Athens Diary“ and „Wolfsburg Diary“. His work has been exhibited in Europe, USA, Asia, Afrika and Australia. He won several awards including the prestigious World Press Photo Award 2003 and 2010. Peter Bialobrzeski has been a visiting professor for photojournalism at the University of Essen in 1998/99. Since 2002 Peter is a regular Professor for photography at the University of the Arts in Bremen/Germany. Furthermore he runs workshops around the world. He is represented by Laurence Miller Gallery in New York, LA Galerie in Frankfurt/Germany and also shows with Robert Morat Gallery in his hometown Hamburg, as well as at m97 Gallery in Shanghai. In 2012 he was honored with the Erich Salomon Award by the German Society of Photographers (DGPh).
