One of the biggest challenges for photographers wanting to start a long-term project is starting the project. Sometimes the task of planning can feel like a mountain impossible to climb: there are so many question with no clear answers that can keep photographers turning in circles and away from materializing the idea.
This two day workshop its specially designed to structure the practical challenges that comes with the documentary practice. It aims to give the participants the tools needed to structure and organize a project and most importantly, to give the idea, the kick-start it needs to move forward.
The workshop is aimed at photographers who are interested or already have an idea of a project or in the process of making one.
• Students will discuss their project and the challenges raised by it.
• Opening doors: which ones and how. There are many ways to access what we need, choosing the right doors is key.
• Organization, structure and finding the way that fits you best.

Una delle più grandi sfide per i fotografi che vogliono iniziare un progetto a lungo termine è iniziare il progetto. A volte l’attività di pianificazione può sembrare una montagna impossibile da scalare: ci sono così tante domande senza una risposta chiara che possono far continuare il fotografo a girare in tondo, lontano dal materializzare le idee.
Questo workshop di due giorni è specificamente progettato per dare struttura alle sfide concrete relative alla pratica professionale della fotografia documentaria. Il suo scopo è dare ai partecipanti gli strumenti indispensabili per progettare e organizzare un progetto, e soprattutto per dare ad un’idea l’abbrivio che serve per vincere l’inerzia iniziale.
Il workshop si rivolge a fotografi che stanno realizzando un progetto, che hanno anche solo un’idea di progetto o che vogliano trovarne una.
- Gli studenti discuteranno il loro progetto e le sfide che questo comporta
- Aprire le porte: quali e come. Ce ne sono molte che ci portano dove vogliamo andare, ma è importante scegliere quelle giuste.
- Organizzazione, strutturazione e ricerca del percorso migliore per ognuno.

Mathieu Asselin (FR/VEN, ̊1973) works and lives between Arles in France and New York City. He began his career working on film productions in Caracas, Venezuela, but shaped his photography practice in the United States. His work mainly consists out of longterm investigative documentary projects, such as his latest book ‘Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation’, which received international acclaim, winning the Kassel FotoBook Festival Dummy Award in 2016, the Aperture Foundation First Book Award in 2017 and has been shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize in 2018. Les Rencontre d’Arles in France, Photographer’s Gallery in London, Fotomuseum Antwerp in Belgium and the European Parlement in Strasbourg are amongst recent venues where his work has been exhibited.
Mathieu Asselin (FR/VEN, 1973) vive e lavora tra Arles, in Francia, e New York. Ha iniziato la sua carriera lavorando nella produzione cinematografica a Caracas, Venezuela, ma si è formato professionalmente negli Stati Uniti. Il suo lavoro consiste principalmente di progetti documentari e investigativi di lungo termine, come ad esempio il suo ultimo libro “Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation”, che ha riscosso un grande successo a livello internazionale, vincendo il Kassel Photobook Dummy Award nel 2016, L’Aperture Foundation First Book Award nel 2017 ed è stato incluso tra i finalisti per il Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize nel 2018. I Rencontres d’Arles in France, la Photographer’s Gallery a Londra, il Fotomuseum di Anversa in Belgio ed il Parlamento Europeo di Strasburgo sono tra i luoghi in cui il suo lavoro è stato in mostra recentemente.
